"Combat terror – with prevention and a tough approach"

Foto: SP

SP leader Emile Roemer spoke in today’s debate with the government of the fate of the victims of the attacks in Brussels. "Our neighbours have been hit," he said. "A blow has been struck against our friends. They are in mourning and with them, we remember." In the debate Roemer pointed once more to the still poor cooperation between security services in Europe and to the need for additional measures to prevent radicalisation in the neighbourhoods. "The threat of an attack will never be wholly removed," he noted. "But we can certainly do more. To defend our constitutional state and our democracy against those who threaten our freedom. Do more – with prevention and a hard approach."

Emile Roemer: Could this have been prevented?

Our neighbours have been hit. A blow has been struck against our friends. Belgians, Dutch people and others are in mourning over the many dead and seriously wounded, And we mourn alongside them. People are full of incomprehension – and full of fear. Many people are asking themselves: are we even safe here in the Netherlands?

Harry van Bommel: Ukraine is better off as a buffer state

On 6th April the Dutch electorate will have the chance to express their views on the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine. From the very first day of the campaign a curtain of fog has been drawn around this treaty’s real meaning. In this article I intend to blow this fog of misunderstandings away and argue that Ukraine is better off as a buffer state between the EU and Russia.

Kox: No-vote offers hope for better cooperation

Foto: SP

“If the Netherlands says no on 6th April to the Association Agreement with Ukraine, there’s a good chance that there’ll be renewed negotiations between Ukraine, the European Union and Russia. Then the mistakes that have been made can perhaps be righted and better agreements made. Better for Ukraine, better for the Netherlands and better for relations within Europe. We mustn’t let this chance go begging!” So says Senator Tiny Kox, the SP’s eastern Europe specialist.

How TTIP bypasses national democracy

Negotiations on the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership could soon end up in a fast track process which may see the treaty between the EU and the US completed by the end of the year. Lilianne Ploumen, the Labour Party trade minister in the Netherlands’ Centre Right-Centre Left coalition government, is looking to keep the momentum going under the Dutch EU Presidency, which comes to an end on June 30.

Harry van Bommel: A yes-vote in the Ukraine referendum will cost us money

Frans Douw recently wrote an opinion piece in this paper dissenting from the party’s line and expressing support for the EU’s Association Agreement with Ukraine. His support was based on the treaty’s symbolic value. I will be voting against the treaty with complete conviction. The facts about Ukraine and the treaty in my view speak for themselves.

SP: we don’t need an EU bureaucratic circus to encourage consumption of milk and fruit in schools

The SP is opposed to new European Union rules governing milk and fruit distributed free of charge in schools. The new rules were adopted on Tuesday by the European Parliament following lobbying from the agricultural lobby and represent yet another appropriation by Brussels of what is in reality a national affair, public health. It will furthermore increase the number of rules and the extent of bureaucracy, in a project which is no more than an advertising campaign for the European Union.
