Protest against whaling: Boycott Icelandic tourism

SP Member of Parliament and environmental spokeswoman Krista van Velzen is calling for a tourist boycott of Iceland to force the country to put an end to its illegal whaling operations. “Commercial whaling is banned throughout the world and is much less profitable overall and specifically to Iceland than is tourism," Ms Van Velzen said. “This means that as ordinary citizens we have an effective means to bring pressure to bear to call a halt to the slaughter of these protected animals.”

Alternative logo to mark 50 years of EU chosen

The ‘United States of Europe’ turned out to be a popular theme amongst entrants to the alternative EU logo competition held last month by the SP. The winner, J. Sanders from Borger, made good use of it in his logo on which the European circle of stars is adorned with a quacking duck.

Minister's change of heart: gay asylum seekers will not be sent back to Iran

Minister for Immigration and Integration Rita Verdonk has informed parliament that homosexual asylum seekers from Iran will henceforth qualify for residency permits. This represents a reversal of her previous policy, a change which resulted from pressure from the SP and others to put an end to the expulsions.

Canadian Asbestos, Licence to Kill

Last friday Canada took the lead in blocking a move to have asbestos added to the list of dangerous substances for which importers must be given explicit warning under the Rotterdam Convention. SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard said that it was “unbelievable that in the year 2006 a developed country like Canada continues to close its eyes to the 90,000 deaths provoked every year by asbestos. By doing so it burdens itself with a very heavy responsibility, purely and simply for financial gain.”

Iraq: Van Bommel delighted with British military chief’s support for withdrawal of foreign forces

The Netherlands must immediately renounce all military and political support for the occupation of Iraq, says SP foreign affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel. Mr Van Bommel expressed his delight that the head of the British armed forces, General Sir Richard Dannatt, shares the SP's opinion that the current international presence in Iraq is part of the problem, rather than part of the solution.

SP demands European enquiry into Probo Koala

The SP's Euro-MPs will today urge Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas to take responsibility for coordinating the different national enquiries into the poison ship Probo Koala. Experience shows how difficult it will be to conduct such investigations now that the ship is free to come and go in and out of harbours as it pleases.
