Foreign Minister must draw obvious conclusions from US misconduct

Foreign Minister Ben Bot cannot simply shrug his shoulders in reaction to the United States' misconduct, which has included lying repeatedly to its NATO allies. This was SP foreign affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel's reaction to President Bush's admission that the Americans had indeed maintained a number of prisons in secret locations in various parts of the world. Last year Mr Bot, under pressure from parliament, had asked the US government whether this was case. What has now emerged is that in response to this question, the American authorities simply lied.

Ivory Coast must be offered technical and legal assistance

The Netherlands must help the Ivory Coast to tackle the consequences of illegal dumping of poisons in the country. To date two people have died and 1700 have been suffered injury as a result of exposure to chemical waste exported to the Ivory Coast by a Dutch corporation. Stop the import of GMO foodstuffs

Last month traces of a banned strain of genetically modified (GM) rice were discovered in rice shipped from the United States and destined for consumption in the European Union. In view of these events, SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard, who sits on both the agriculture and environment committees of the European Parliament, today asked the European Commission subject the import of GM foodstuffs to fundamental review.

Minister must take immediate action against slaughter of seals

SP Member of Parliament Krista van Velzen is urging agriculture and fisheries minister Cees Veerman to bring pressure to bear within the EU's Council of Ministers for a Europe-wide ban on trade in seal products. The European Parliament today adopted a resolution demanding an end to the import, export and sale of all such goods. Although the resolution is not binding on member states, it represents an important first step towards ending the cruel hunting of seals, as Europe forms an important market for these products.

Fuel-efficient 'Twingo Smile' should be given support

Europe's most fuel-efficient car has been allowed to sit gathering dust for the last decade. According to SP Euro-MP Erik Meijer, who sits on the European Parliament's Transport Committee, it is high time that production and sales of this car – the Twingo Smile, which does 30 km to the litre, or about 90 mpg – were given a stimulus. “I don't think we should sit around waiting for China to realise its earning potential," says Mr Meijer, who today asked the European Commission to consider the introduction of concrete measures to promote the vehicle.

Van Bommel urges ban on double pensions for Euro-MPs

A legal ban on the practice whereby Dutch MEPs are able to receive double pensions is urgently needed, according to SP European affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel. “Euro-MPs from the Netherlands receive a full pension from the Dutch state,” Mr van Bommel said. “Yet despite this they can also pocket a Euro-pension, a major share of which is financed by the taxpayer. This must be stopped.”
