EU plans bad for Dutch railways

In the opinion of SP Member of Parliament Farshad Bashir, the European Commission should immediately withdraw its plans for EU railways. ‘According to Brussels the Netherlands must chop its railway network into pieces and sell these pieces off to different rail companies,” says Bashir. “What you would then be left with would be a chaotic patchwork of lines, companies and regulations for which no-one any longer would have responsibility.’

Council of Europe investigates public service provision

tiny koxSP Senator Tiny Kox has been appointed rapporteur on ‘the state and public services’ by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), in which he leads the United Left Group. The forty-seven member states of the Council of Europe are bound by the treaty which forms the organisation’s basis to preserve ‘social cohesion’ by promoting the welfare of all citizens, countering inequality and limiting differences. The fear exists, however, that through ever-increasing marketisation and constantly growing cuts in public spending, this obligation will be less and less frequently met in Europe.

Cypriot ‘no’ means black mark for Dijsselbloem

The rejection by the Cypriot Parliament of the Eurogroup’s proposals demonstrates the extent of the chaos which the body’s decision has caused during the last few days. Referring to the group’s recently appointed Chair, who is also the Netherlands’ Finance Minister, SP Euro-MP Dennis de Jong said, ‘Jeroen Dijsselbloem has failed on a number of points. To start with he should have proposed a settlement which would have spared Cypriot savers with less than €100,000. In this sort of matter you have to ensure that the strongest shoulders carry the heaviest burden. Small savers should have been given reassurance, and no doubt should have been cast over the rule that whatever difficulties a bank may find itself in, you can always get a sum of up to €100,000 back. This is leading to huge instability in the Eurozone with in the worst case scenario a run on the banks in the Mediterranean countries. Dijsselbloem also misjudged the likelihood of the Cypriot Parliament kicking this into touch. It’s completely understandable and absolutely correct that people in Cyprus wouldn’t accept this reverse bank robbery.'

De Jong: European Commission wants to put stranglehold on member states

The European Commission today proposed taking further steps in relation to European Economic Governance (EEG). The proposals would mean that the member states would be on an even tighter leash, one held by the Commission. SP Euro-MP Dennis de Jong, commenting on the proposals, said, ‘In fact what the European Commission wants is to get the member states into contracts which amount to a stranglehold. If the member states aren’t prepared to adjust their social rights and their collective labour agreements to Brussels’ demands, then the Commission would be able to shut off the subsidy tap or impose other sanctions. Anyone who still suspected that EEG might turn out to be not so bad is in for a rude awakening.’
