NATO divided over approach in Afghanistan

The disparaging remarks of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates regarding the performance of soldiers in southern Afghanistan reveal cracks in NATO's front, says SP Member of Parliament and foreign affairs specialist Harry van Bommel. Gates said that NATO troops in the south of Afghanistan did not know how to combat an uprising, a criticism which was directed in part at the Netherlands.

Farshad Bashir becomes new SP Member of Parliament

The twenty-year old son of Afghan refugees, Farshad Bashir from the city of Leeuwarden was installed this afternoon as a Member of Parliament for the SP. A student of physics, he will be both the youngest ever member of parliament's main legislative chamber, and the first MP of Afghan origin. .

EU threatens renewed postponement of CO2 reduction

The European Parliament this evening debated the strategy for limiting CO2 emissions from cars. SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard, commenting on the debate, said: “Now the centre-right liberal group seems to be dancing to the tune of the car manufacturers’ lobby. They want to allow even higher emissions than does the European Commission.” Liotard’s views incurred the wrath of the Parliament’s rapporteur on the issue, the German liberal Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, but that didn't stop her from filing a number of amendments to Chatzimarkis’ report in an attempt to give it teeth.

EU Commission ‘afraid of reactions to liberalisation of health care’

The European Commission was supposed to publish its proposals for further liberalisation of health care at the end of last year, but no trace of this has yet been seen. "They're afraid of the reactions and of the consequences as long as the new reform treaty remains to be ratified by all member states," says SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard. A member of the European Parliament's Public Health Committee, Liotard, who is in Strasbourg for the parliamentary plenary, is calling on the Commission to show greater openness.

SP and Labour propose ban on fur farming

Members of Parliament Krista van Velzen of the SP and Harm-Evert Waalkens of the PvdA (Labour Party) plan to bring forward a proposal on Monday for a ban on fur farms in the Netherlands. The two parties want to see the sector rapidly phased out, so that by 2018 at the latest no more minks or other animals would be killed for their pelts.
