Referendum "initiative law" proposed: Premier Balkenende "evasive and dishonest"

SP Member of Parliament and European affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel today presented the proposed "initiative law", a measure required under the Dutch constitution before a referendum can be called. In proposing the law, the SP was joined by four small opposition parties: the Green Left, the centrist D66, the right-wing populists of the Freedom Party (PVV) and the single-issue animal rights party the PvdD.

Silent Vigil for Al Mansouri at Iranian Embassy

The silent vigil outside the Iranian Embassy organised this evening by the SP in order to put pressure on the Iranian authorities not to carry out the death penalty on Dutch human rights campaigner Abdulla Al Mansouri won impressive support. A large number of SP Members of Parliament were joined by colleagues from the Green Left and the PVV (Freedom Party) as well as Amnesty International director Eduard Nazarski.

SP urges government to act to save life of Dutch activist condemned to death in Iran

SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel is urging the government to use every means at its disposal to save the life of Dutch human rights activist Abdulla al Mansouri. Not only should the Iranian ambassador be called to account, but the Netherlands' ambassador in Tehran must be recalled to discuss the matter, he argues. An Iranian court has passed a death sentence on Al Mansouri, citing 'terrorist activities'.

SP demands debate on terms of engagement in Uruzgan

The SP is demanding a parliamentary debate over the terms of engagement observed by Dutch soldiers in the Afghan province of Uruzgan. The demand was provoked by the news that Australian military personnel stationed in the province refused to fight alongside Dutch colleagues because they considered the chance of civilian deaths to be too great. According to a UN report, Dutch armed forces were responsible for dozens of civilian victims.

SP opposes receipt of Guantanamo prisoners

The Netherlands must not agree to the request by the US to receive prisoners currently held at Guantanamo Bay. This is the firm opinion expressed by SP Member of Parliament and international affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel as he passed through Washington, DC on his way back from a visit to the American prison camp in Cuba.

Message to NATO ministers: no prolongation of mission in Uruzgan

Support Afghanistan, stop the war! That was the message from around a hundred people who gathered this afternoon amongst the lighthouses of Noordwijk, the Dutch coastal town where the government often hosts international conferences. Just a few hundred metres away stood the Hotel Huis ter Duin, where twenty-seven ministers of defence met to discuss NATO's plans for prolonging its mission in Afghanistan. The demonstrators were there to put the case that Afghanistan must be helped, certainly, but by other than military means.
