Congo mission must benefit population

The Dutch government wants to send around fifty soldiers to the Congo for a four month period to participate in a European Union mission to ensure good conduct in the presidential elections to be held on 30th July. In deciding whether to support the proposal, the SP will give priority to the interests of the Congolese people.

Dead European Constitution returned to Brussels by rocket bike

Precisely a year after the Dutch people voted to say ‘No’ to the European Constitution, members of the SP cycling team took the rejected document on a symbolic journey back to Brussels. Member of Parliament and European affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel, leader of last year's No-campaign, accompanied it this morning on the first stage of its journey. “The European constitution was declared dead by the Netherlands and France,” said Harry as he set off from The Hague, “but numerous people in Brussels continue to insist on trying to resuscitate it. We want to make it clear that the ‘No’ wasn't some kind of take-it-or-leave-it advice, but a solid rejection of the EU's present appalling direction.”

EU must stop passing passenger data to US

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) yesterday ruled that the EU must stop passing data on passengers to the US. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the American authorities have been demanding detailed information on all citizens of EU member states travelling to the US. According to the Court, however, this is illegal. Commenting on the ruling, SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard said: “This is an important victory for European citizens and for the European Parliament.”

NATO risks sinking into Afghan quagmire

Afghanistan remains priority number 1 for NATO. The alliance cannot afford to fail, and member states must therefore provide the necessary resources and allow the soldiers on the ground to engage in armed conflict with rebels and not force them to restrict themselves to “peace keeping”. This was the message which NATO Secretary General and General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and General James Jones, commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe, presented to the alliance's parliamentary assembly when it gathered this week in Paris.

SP supports action for a single meeting place for European Parliament

SP member of Parliament Harry van Bommel’s call for an end to the European Parliament’s wholesale monthly transferral to Strasbourg has found support from within the EP itself. A petition calling for an end to this waste of money, at www.oneseat.eu, a website set up by Swedish Euro-MP Cecilia Malmström, has attracted signatures from 280,000 citizens of different EU member states within days of its opening. “Hopefully we’ll at last see an end to this ridiculous state of affairs,” Mr Van Bommel said.

Krista van Velzen: ‘Antilles must be persuaded to tackle problem of asbestos’

SP Member of Parliament Krista van Velzen has asked Secretary of State for the Environment Pieter van Geel to do all in his power to bring to an end any use of life-threatening asbestos in the Antilles, a group of Caribbean islands which, though self-governing, remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the Netherlands proper, 800 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases. Concern over this has led to new legislation, including an EU-wide ban on production and use of any materials containing asbestos, but in the Antilles these measures do not apply and the carcinogenic material remains on general sale.
