EU-Israel trade agreement: European Parliament demands additional guarantees

The European Parliament is demanding additional guarantees regarding the origin of Israeli products before it will put the seal of approval on a new agreement governing trade with Israel. SP Euro-MP Dennis de Jong sees this as a minimal first step, but continues to support a suspension of the Association Agreement under which the trade accord falls. ‘As long as Israel presses ahead with its illegal building of settlements in the Occupied Territories and the abuse of human rights, I will remain opposed to extending further trade privileges to Israel. We must first see far-reaching improvements, and only then will we be able to discuss trade privileges.’

European institutions ignore Transparency International report

Today SP Euro-MP Dennis De Jong, together with anti-corruption NGO Transparency International, organised a meeting in the European Parliament at which TI’s newly-published report on corruption in Europe was launched. 'The study makes clear that corruption is exacerbating the current economic crisis and undermining democracy,’ says De Jong. ‘That’s why it’s so disappointing that the only reaction from the European Commission has been to indicate that they will be bringing their own report out in 2013. At the same time it appears that in the agreement between the European Commission and Portugal there wasn’t a single mention of combating corruption, while Van Rompuy’s new plans (‘the foundation stones’) nowhere include ideas for tackling it. The European institutions seem content simply to let this go on.’

De Jong wants debate on undermining of MEPs’ Code of Conduct

SP Euro-MP Dennis de Jong rejects what he calls ‘sabotage’ of the recently tightened-up Code of Conduct for Members of the European Parliament by the body’s president and vice-presidents. The Code of Conduct was established following a lobbying scandal last year. Dennis de Jong was one of eight proposers of the new rules which, amongst other things, fix a maximum value for gifts and demand more openness regarding secondary services provided by Members, as well as the acceptance of free trips. ‘Now the Bureau, the top management body of the Parliament, is sticking a knife into the new code, making the rules more flexible, entirely on its own initiative. I want an urgent debate in order to reverse this decision.’

Van Bommel: China must free arrested Tibetans

SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel says that he is ‘extremely disturbed’ by recent news from the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa that hundreds of Tibetans have been arrested. ‘I’m asking Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal to tell me what he knows about these worrying reports,’ says Van Bommel. ‘I also want the Minister to put pressure on the Chinese authorities to give the detainees fair treatment and to immediately release the non-violent activists.’
