SP-senator Gerkens appointed as key leader of democracy advocacy organization IPU
SP-senator Arda Gerkens has been appointed President of the Geo Political Group Twelve Plus, a co-ordinating body which brings together National Groups within the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the IPU. The 12+ group is composed of members from countries whose parliaments are based on multi-party democracies and other democratic principles as enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights.
The IPU is the global organization of National Parliaments representing Multi-Party Democracies. The Union was founded in 1989 by a small group of parliamentarians promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue. Since then the initiative has since grown into a truly global organization of National Parliaments. Today 179 Member Parliaments, 13 Associate Members and increasing numbers of parliamentarians from all over the world are involved in the work of the IPU.
Primary focusses are peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment and sustainable development through political dialogue, cooperation and parliamentary action. In addition, the UPI is also heavily involved in pressing global issues such as climate, energy, economics and terrorism.
Gerkens is proud to be appointed president of the influential 12+ group: 'The last years the Dutch Delegation has been contributing to important topics at the IPU like Global Warming, Human Rights and the Rights of parliamentarians. The Presidency of the 12+ is an acknowledgment of our efforts. I am honored that the Dutch Delegation has put their trust in me and supported me to carry the Presidency.'
