‘Paris attack is an attack on press freedom and on freedom of expression’
SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel reacted with shock to the attack in Paris on the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. ‘The SP extends it sympathy to the victims of this senseless deed and to their families and friends,’ said Van Bommel. ‘It is an attack on press freedom and on freedom of expression.’
Van Bommel is posing urgent questions to the government as to the consequences of this attack for Dutch journalists and organisations. ‘We want to see an investigation into whether this necessitates tightening up security for Dutch journalists,’ he says. ‘Press freedom and freedom of expression are mainstays of our free society. We must do all we can to defend them.’
