The Socialist Party and SP Jongeren strongly condemn the recent steps taken by the Iraqi government in an attempt to silence The General Union of Students in the Republic of Iraq.

For a nation to prosper it is of immense importance that young people can develop themselves in an environment of academic freedom. It is an outrage to see the Iraqi authorities attack this freedom by banning the Union to work and prosecuting their fellow activists. Education and academics are no place for sectarian political games enforced by military or any other form of state repression.

A better world is possible. A world of equality, solidarity and human dignity. A world there our youth hold the future. Therefore, we stand in solidarity with The General Union of Students in the Republic of Iraq.
