In each province, SP calls for energy supply to be put back into provincial hands
SP Provincial Council groups in every province are calling for energy supply to be put back into provincial hands. In Groningen a proposal to this end was adopted by a majority of the Council last night. In Utrecht this happened at the beginning of this month.
At last week’s People's Protest, SP leader Lilian Marijnissen said that the nationalization of energy will be the SP commitment for the Provincial Council elections on March 15. Before they were sold, many energy companies were owned by provinces. The SP petition calling for this nationalization has been signed more than 125,000 times so far.
Research commissioned by Energie Beheer Nederland shows that more than half of Dutch people believe it is a good idea if energy is nationalized. Many people now suffer cold because they cannot afford to turn on their heating, while energy companies pay out large profits to their shareholders. This has to change. Now that the government is transferring billions of euros to commercial energy companies, we want control in return. We want to use the profits to lower energy bills. It is a good thing that Groningen and Utrecht took a first step.
