In an open letter the National Party Council of the Socialist Party of the Netherlands expresses its deep and sincere solidarity and friendship with their comrades Demirtas, Figen Yüksekdag of the Kurdish HDP. Demirtas and Yüksekdag as well as all other members and representatives of HDP who have been unlawfully imprisoned by the Turkish authorities and deprived from their fundamental freedoms and rights.

Four years ago Selahattin, Figen and so many others were shamefully robbed of their freedoms and their democratic rights by the Turkish authorities. By doing so, the authorities brutally violated their own obligations under the Turkish Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, to which Turkey has committed itself long ago.

Party Leader Leader Lilian Marijnissen, MP Sadet Karabulut, Senator Tiny Kox and International Secretary Arnout Hoekstra repeat the Party’s call on the Turkish authorities to immediately release Selahattin, Figen and all other political prisoners in Turkey, and to restore them in all their demcoratic rights.

In addition the SP calls again on the Dutch Government to remind the Turkish government to its own obligations towards its citizens, and to make clear that continuation of its crack down of politicians, journalists, academics and activists, will have serious consequences in the relations between the Turkish government and  the Netherlands.
