Historic debate on the ‘State of the Union'

The debate on the European Union held yearly in the Dutch parliament took place yesterday, the very day that the Treaty of Lisbon came into force. According to SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel, this made the day "historic, but not very cheerful. To this treaty will always be attached the knowledge that it has arrived without the support of the Dutch people.” Van Bommel was referring to the blocking of a referendum on the treaty by the governing coalition.

'Defence ministry must stop recruiting child soldiers'

The Ministry of Defence must call a halt to its 'recruitment propaganda', including ads aimed at attracting interest from teenagers and children aged 11 and over. SP Member of Parliament Remi Poppe will take advantage of this week's debate on the defence budget to call for an end to such advertising. "With websites like www.Oranjebaretten.nl, the army is approaching children in a completely tasteless manner," says Poppe. "The emphasis is on excitement. In reality soldiers after a tour of duty often suffer mental breakdown. Unfortunately, they also run the risk of being killed."

‘European Commission wastes taxpayers' money, sometimes illegally’

Dennis de Jong, SP group leader in the European Parliament, delivered a stinging critique during today's plenary session of the Parliament of the way in which the EU spends its money. De Jong is particularly concerned by the European Commission's expenditure in the framework of external relations. This has also been the subject of criticism from the EU's own Court of Auditors, which described some of the spending as unlawful.

Social democrats trade away rights of gay couples

SP Euro-MP Dennis de Jong has slammed the European Parliament's so-called Socialists and Democrats group, which brings together Labour and other centre-left parties, for their failure to vote in favour of granting gay couples the same rights as other co-habitees. "The SP does not believe that Brussels has the right to decide whether or not EU member states introduce gay marriage,” says De Jong. “This is a matter for national parliaments. Recognising the rights of people who live outside their country in other parts of the European Union, however, is another matter. A Dutch homosexual couple should have the rights granted to them under Dutch law, and they should keep these rights if they go to stay or to reside in another member state. This applies to very many legal contracts and this case should be no exception."

Parliament calls for closure of secret prison in Afghanistan

Parliament has voted to support an SP motion calling on the government to close the secret prison in Bagram in Afghanistan. Harry van Bommel, SP Member of Parliament and foreign policy spokesman, says: “Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen has always said that he wants to pursue a strict policy on human rights. The Netherlands is against the secret prison in Guantanamo Bay, so the government must also be in favour of the immediate closure of Bagram. Verhagen must insist to Afghanistan and the United States, and right away, that this prison close.”
