Water Scarcity and Drought

On Wednesday the European Parliament votes on the Seeber report on water scarcity and drought. “Debates on oil are fierce, so why is this not the case for water?” asks SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard. She is currently completing a book on the subject of water policy, and will take the floor in the European Parliament debate on the subject.

EU symbols: when will listening to the voters become a 'European value'?

Should the EU flag be be set down in a constitutional treaty? The Dutch Council of State, our highest court when it comes to matters of governance and law, said that it should not, unless a referendum approved it first. But anxious to avoid another flop, Prime Minister Balkenende told the European Parliament in a speech in Strasbourg in 2007 that the 'symbols' contained in the Lisbon Treaty must be removed from its text.

Council of Europe against closing down of Democratic Society Party in Turkey

While recalling that the independence of the judiciary is fundamental, and that no influence should be exerted on the Constitutional Court of Turkey, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has expressed his concern about the judicial proceedings that could lead to the closing down of the Democratic Society Party in Turkey. The Democratic Society Party demands full respect of the human rights of the Kurdish citizens of Turkey.

French censorship of Chinese-language broadcaster must end

This week a number of MEPs from different political groups will use an official European Parliament 'political declaration' in an attempt to give teeth to their demand that the European Commission and the member state governments lend their weight to a campaign to stop the censorship of news broadcast to China. In June French satellite firm Eutelsat ceased transmission of news, some of critical of the Chinese authorities, into China by broadcaster NTDTV, ostensibly because of 'technical problems'. Though a declaration would have no binding force, it would increase pressure on the European Commission to act to stop this blatant interference with media freedom.

Moroccans left money by parents see it blocked by state

Moroccans emigrating to the Netherlands are being prevented from transferring money deposited in bank accounts there or invested in houses. The bulk of their money, including inheritance, is being blocked by the Moroccan state. Prompted by reports in the daily newspaper De Volkskrant, SP Euro-MP Erik Meijer has put a number of questions on the matter to the European Commission.

Van Bommel demands Dutch support for Iranian hunger strikers

Harry van Bommel is urging Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen to summon the Iranian ambassador in relation to a long-lasting hunger strike currently being conducted by dozens of political prisoners in his country. “Verhagen must show that the human rights situation in Iran is something which he takes seriously,” said Van Bommel, the SP's spokesman on international affairs. “This could be achieved by telling the Iranian ambassador that the demands of these primarily political prisoners must be met.”
