Roemer: Help West Africa in the fight against Ebola outbreak
The Dutch government must offer immediate aid to the countries confronted by the Ebola outbreak, SP leader Emile Roemer said today. 'Yesterday the World Health Organisation issued an impressive call for international solidarity with the countries who have neither the resources nor the know-how to check and combat the outbreak. In my view the Netherlands must heed this call.’
Roemer has asked Prime Minister Mark Rutte to take an immediate look at what the Netherlands can contribute in West Africa. 'We are a country with a great deal of logistical knowledge but also with outstanding health care,’ he says. ‘In my view we must offer our aid.’In the last few weeks, Roemer notes, it has been painfully obvious that efforts to check the Ebola outbreak have not been successful. 'Every day we hear about more and more victims,’ he says. ‘Last week Sierra Leona issued a call for aid and now the WHO has done the same we need to get moving. We can’t leave West Africa in the lunch and must not waste any more time.’
