Van Bommel: Where has Dutch aid money for Srebrenica gone?
SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel is demanding an enquiry into the millions that the Netherlands has poured into Srebrenica. Widespread corruption means that Dutch aid money for Srebrenica may not reach the people, while hundreds of refugees continue to wait for available accommodation so that they can return to the town.
A programme on Dutch television yesterday revealed that money from the Netherlands sent to Srebrenica is not being well spent. According to current mayor of Srebrenica Muhamed Durakovic the Netherlands is writing “blank cheques”, with no effective monitoring. Van Bommel wants answers: ‘These serious allegations cannot go unanswered,’ he says. ‘Expenditure still remains to be accounted for.’
Van Bommel has put parliamentary questions to the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation asking for her comments.
