Pestering the consumer won't solve environmental problems

Official state planners concerned with environmental questions have advised the government that climate and sustainability targets will not be met. This is predictable, as the political elite have for the most part left the ball in the individual consumer's court rather than with those who produce and import this mess wholesale. Pollution has to be tackled at source.

Georgia: SP demands clarification as Russians are accused of use of cluster bombs

SP Member of Parliament and Foreign Affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel has asked Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen for clarification regarding reports of alleged use of cluster bombs by Russian forces in Georgia. A report from Human Rights Watch states that Dutch cameraman Stan Storimans, employed by the broadcaster RTL, fell victim to this controversial weapon when with seven other covilians he lost his life in the Georgian town of Gori earlier this week.

Cold War Revived

The conflict between Georgia and Russia concerns much more than control over the rebellious province of South Ossetia. It is about accession to NATO and relations between East and West. If we are not careful we could be back, in a short space of time, in a situation reminiscent of the Cold War.

SP: 'EU must tackle problem of floating plastic as sea pollutant'

Erik Meijer“The European Union should be working with other organisations to find a solution to the problem of plastic floating in international waters,” says SP Euro-MP Erik Meijer. In the Pacific Ocean the plastic would be sufficient to form an island bigger than France, Spain and Portugal combined. Bottles, bags and remnants of cargo thrown overboard come mostly from North America and circulate, clotting together in the ocean currents, between Japan and the United States.

Immediate ceasefire needed in Georgia

SP foreign affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel has asked Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen to outline the Netherlands' position in relation to the war between Russia and Georgia, in which Georgia's candidate membership of NATO or so-called MAP status is an important point of contention.

Bolivian referendum: Impressions of the SP's official observer

Earlier in the month SP Member of Parliament Ewout Irrgang, spokesman on development issues, and parliamentary advisor Riekje Camara spent ten days in Bolivia, observing the referendum of 10th August on whether President Evo Morales and a number of regional opposition governors should remain in office.
