Consumer and data protection – or less privacy?

This week the European Parliament will vote on an extensive, complicated 'Telecom Package': more than 200 pages of text and 194 proposed amendments on the improvement of the security and integrity of electronic networks. As consumers we must be better protected against spam and other annoyances and our personal data must be protected as well. Everyone agrees about these things.

SP calls for immediate introduction of licensing for employment agencies

An investigation by an organisation dedicated to ensuring that temporary employment bureaux adhere to collective work agreements, which in the Netherlands lay down standards of working conditions and wage rates per trade and sector, has revealed widespread abuse of migrant workers. The investigation showed that more than 100,000 eastern European workers, employed as temporary labour, were subject to exploitation of various kinds by 5,000 fraudulent employment agencies. SP Member of Parliament Paul Ulenbelt, commenting on the findings, said: "The employment minister promised tough action against the exploitation of eastern European workers, but what we're seeing is the exact opposite. "A declaration from the European Commission that this crime against humanity took place would mean for the Kurdish people a recognition of the suffering inflicted on them." Together with Liberal (VVD) MEP Jules Maaten, and Bas Belder who represents the Netherlands' two small Christian parties, Meijer has tabled a number of written parliamentary questions on the issue.

Van Bommel: Stop the expansion of the war to Pakistan

SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel has asked Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen for clarification regarding American attacks on Pakistani territory from within Afghanistan. Van Bommel, foreign affairs spokesman for the SP, wants to know what mandate formed the basis of these attacks, given that the Pakistani government has not given its permission for them. His fear is that what is taking place is the extension of the war in Afghanistan and that this will have consequences for Dutch soldiers in the area.
