Reduce CO2 from car exhausts (II)

“My congratulations go to the environment, my condolences to the car industry lobby” says SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard in reaction to Thursday morning's vote in the European Parliament's Environment Committee. The SP was in favour of a standard emissions limit for new cars of 120 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Make shipping safer

SP Euro-MP Erik Meijer wants to see an end brought as quickly as possible to the dangers and abuses which plague shipping. He spoke on the subject today in the European Parliament plenary debate: "In sea transport freedom of enterprise can lead to dangerous abuses."

Reduce CO2 from car exhausts

Tomorrow the Environment Committee of the European Parliament will vote on the legislative proposal fixing emission standards for private cars, including the number of grams of CO2 permissible in car exhausts. The measure is aimed at limiting the average carbon dioxide emissions from new vehicles. The EU's goal is to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 20% before 2020.

Dalits of India need our help to combat violence and discrimination

On 19th September the European Union will hold its ninth official meeting with the government of India, a summit whose participants will include members of the European Commission and the Indian Prime Minister. France being the current holder of the European Union's rotating presidency, the summit will take place in Marseille. Nicolas Sarkozy will certainly be present, especially given that the TV cameras will also be in attendance. In the European Parliament today India was celebrated as the faithful ally, major trading partner and partner in the common struggle against terrorism. But SP Euro-MP Erik Meijer called attention also to a side of the country which is less discussed.

Russia is afraid of new European division

We were in the right but this isn't being recognised. So say leading Russian politicians, the army general staff and most Russians concerning the recent war with Georgia. Georgia started it, but Russia feels itself to have been put in the dock. And the Russians fear a new division of Europe, says SP Senator Tiny Kox, speaking from Moscow.
