'Once Again, EU Court of Justice gives carte blanche for social dumping'

'This is the fourth time that European judges have given their permission for the undermining of employees' rights. And as for those social democrats who think that the Lisbon Treaty, thrown out last week by the Irish, would solve this problem, they are in for a rude awakening.' So said Erik Meijer, Member of the European Parliament for the Socialist Party, in reaction to yesterday's ruling from the European Court of Justice.

Agnes Kant, SP spokeswoman on health and health care, has announced her candidacy for the parliamentary group leadership. Born in 1967, Kant is an epidemiologist by training and was first elected to parliament in 1998.

European Parliament Approves EU Plans to Lock Up Immigrants

SP Members of the European Parliament today joined colleagues in the United European Left Group (GUE-NGL) in voting against the Weber Report on the treatment of immigrants or, in the EU jargon 'on common standards and procedures in Member States for returning illegally staying third-country nationals'. Protests against the report, including a demonstration by left politicians in front of the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, in the end failed to convince the parliament to reject the draconian plans, which will allow undocumented immigrants to be locked up for 18 months.
