The failure of the WTO summit in Cancún opens up the prospect of social globalisation

The result of the summit was no surprise. During the last week in Cancún I have seen the contradictions between, on the one side, the G21 (the coalition of more developed developing countries) under the leadership of Brazil, and, on the other side, the European Union and United States, grow ever sharper. European Commissioner Pascal Lamy is the person who above all has had to pay for this. By attaching itself, at the Doha negotiating round, to an uncompromising demand for a radical review of farm subsidies, the EU had manoeuvred itself into an impossible position. At Cancún it turned out that the Union did not really want to follow through on this commitment.

SP wins four seats in Senate

The SP group in the Dutch Senate has doubled its presence in the ‘First Chamber’ from 2 to 4 seats, due to the elections on May 26th. by the members of the 12 provincial parliaments.

SP doubles seats in provincial parliaments

Due to the results of the provincial elections on March 11th 2003, the SP now gets 39 seats in 11 provincial parliaments, an increase of 20. This will also result in twice as much seats in the national Senate (from 2 to 4 seats). The new Senate will be elected by the members of the provincial parliaments on May 26th.

On an international meeting of anti-war organisations in London, various plans for demonstrations were anounced and a common declaration was issued.

‘Stop the war against Iraq’: Over 70.000 protest in Amsterdam

On february 15th 2003, the world-wide day of protest against the war against Iraq, tens of thousands protested in the streets of Amsterdam. The SP mobilised thousands of its members to Amsterdam, organizing buses from all over the country.

Commentary by the Executive Committee of the Socialist Party of the Netherlands on the results of the general election of 22nd January, 2003

The SP gained more votes in last elections (january 22nd 2003) then ever: from 5,9 to 6,3 percent. Not enough however to increase the number of seats in parliament (nine since May 2002).
