No wonder some Christians are against the EU Constitution

Minister of Justice Piet Hein Donner is, as a Christian, is in favour of the Constitution and is disappointed that the small political party, the Christian Union, is against. SP Member of Parliament Harry van Bommel does not share Mr Donner's feelings: he finds it quite understandable that many Christians want nothing to do with the proposal.

Services Directive threat to social housing

Similar to the housing associations found in some parts of the UK, Dutch housing corporations, although privatised just over a decade ago, are non-profit foundations obliged to meet a number of exacting statutory obligations. Vital to the provision of affordable housing in the Netherlands, they are now under fire from the European Commission. Kartika Liotard, Member of the European Parliament for the SP, explains.

Justice Minister must explain 'war' comment to Parliament

Socialist Party MP Harry van Bommel has called on Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner to appear before Parliament to give an explanation of his remark that if the Netherlands voted to reject the proposed European Constitution this might lead to the threat of war. Mr Donner made the remark during a meeting of his party in Ede, saying that a 'no' could lead to a Balkan-type scenario. According to Mr Van Bommel, the minister's statement represents “an indirect threat aimed at the voter.”

French ‘Non’ will have a major influence on Dutch referendum

“Thanks to PSV knocking Lyon out, you won’t be winning the European Champions’ League, but you can still pick up a fantastic European trophy on 29th May if you reject the European Constitution. A French ‘Non’ would certainly help us fo follow suit three days later with our own rejection of this neoliberal ‘constitution’.” That’s what SP Senator Tiny Kox told a packed referendum meeting in Paris yesterday evening.

Ban on import of GM maize “small victory”

Earlier this week the European Commission, in response to a question from the SP's team in the European Parliament, said that it was not minded to introduce a ban on imports of genetically modified maize from the United States. Yet today, to the delight of Euro-MP Kartika Liotard and national MP Krista van Velzen, who has persistently questioned agriculture minister Cees Veerman on the subject, that is precisely what the Commission has done.
