Parliamentary debate over alleged abuses in Iraq postponed

SP Member of Parliament and foreign affairs spokesman Harry van Bommel says that he “can live with” the decision by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence to delay to a later date a debate on the alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners. Parliament will first present the government with a number of written questions soliciting information on the matter, and no decision will be taken on further action until next Monday.

SP supports painting firms in fight against EU bureaucracy

From 2008 vans used by painting firms to ferry personnel and materials to the worksite will be required, as is already the case for buses and lorries, to be fitted with a tachograph, an instrument for monitoring driving times. Some small firms are currently exempt from such an obligation, and exemption will continue to apply to certain sectors, such as garden maintenance. Europe funds 200.000 virtual cows

The European Parliament yesterday debated the way in which vast sums of money are wasted in the European Union. The occasion was the inclusion on the agenda of the Parliament's Strasbourg plenary session of the Annual Report of the European Court of Auditors, the official EU financial watchdog which, year after year, reports the disappearance of enormous amounts of taxpayers' money. Taking just one example, SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard noted that "Europe subsidises 200,000 cows that don't exist!"

Services Directive, the last lap

Tomorrow the European Parliament will debate former Commissioner Frits Bolkestein's Directive on Services for the last time, before voting on it later in the day. The proposal will almost certainly be approved. SP Euro-MP Kartika Liotard will make a final attempt to remove its worst features, hoping to win the support of Labour (PvdA) colleagues:. "We are not ready to throw in the towel," she said. "It's not over until the final bell."
