Dutch participation in missile shield? No thanks!

Despite deep cuts in defence spending the Netherlands’ navy is participating in the development of a NATO missile shield. In addition to the enormous costs, Harry van Bommel and Jasper van Dijk foresee problems affecting foreign policy.

SP Senator Kox to lead election observer team in Russia

The Council of Europe has been invited to send observers to Russia for the approaching parliamentary elections, and SP Senate leader Tiny Kox has been named head of the mission. To prepare the ground he will next week visit Moscow, in the company of four other members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Asylum minister must open new investigation into case of Mauro Manuel

SP Member of Parliament Sharon Gesthuizen is urging Immigration and Asylum Minister Gerd Leers to take a fresh look at the entire collection of documents relating to Mauro Manuel, the young Limburger facing deportation to his native Angola after ten years in the southern Netherlands province.

De Jong: Government leaders still held hostage by financial markets

The outcome of the European summit on rescuing the Euro cannot be called historic. It’s simply more of the same. That was the message from SP Euro-MP Dennis de Jong in the debate with Commission President José Barroso and Council Chair Herman van Rompuy which followed immediately on the summit. 'Government leaders are still being held hostage by the financial markets,’ said De Jong, who in his speech also took Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to task over the agreement.

Irrgang: ‘An agreement isn’t a solution’

SP Member of Parliament Ewout Irrgang does not believe that the agreement sealed during the night represents a solution to the problem with which the eurocrisis began in May, 2010: the problem of Greece. According to Irrgang the annulation of 50% of Greece’s debt to the banks will not prove sufficient to enable the country to bounce back. He notes that ‘The total Greek debt will fall by less than 28%. Even in 2020 the debt will remain about as high as it was at the beginning of the crisis in Greece.’
