Today saw the SP's newly proposed policy on integration made available to the party's more than 50,000 members. The statement, entitled Shared Future, will now be discussed in the branches, leading to a renewed and updated policy on integration.

Parliament compels Minister to oppose resumption of whaling

Parliament today adopted with cross-party support a proposal from SP animal welfare specialist Krista van Velzen which will compel Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg to support in its entirety the existing moratorium on the hunting of whales. Verburg had declared her intention to develop a joint proposal with Japan, Iceland and Norway which would permit whaling in a limited number of areas.

Recognise genocide against Kurds

On Sunday it will be just twenty years ago that Saddam Hussein attacked the Kurdish town of Halabja with chemical weapons. This attack formed part of the Anfal Campaign, which was aimed at driving out or destroying the population of Iraqi Kurdistan. Members of Parliament Harry van Bommel and Fred Teeven recently attended the international conference on this subject in Erbil, Iraq. They have since together taken up the cause of international recognition of the genocide committed against the Kurds and of the establishment of a commemorative monument in the Netherlands.

Marijnissen: “There's nothing wrong with globalisation”

Jan Marijnissen sees little to celebrate in the way in which the EU is waging war against globalisation. “Globalisation, there's nothing wrong with it. It can give underdeveloped countries the chance to develop further. The problem is more to do with how the EU, the US and institutions such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are managing globalisation”, says SP leader Jan Marijnissen.
